Overview
From the Beat Generation to the Grateful Dead, from counterculture to new technologies, San Francisco has always been the world’s stage for what’s next.
This city wasn’t just built on gold; it was also built on the boldness of its creators. The intersection of art, technology, and civic life has defined San Francisco for generations. That creative legacy belongs to downtown.
The DDC’s Arts & Culture program invests in programs that make that legacy visible and alive. Downtown First Thursdays draws more than 20,000 people downtown for live music, food, and community. We’ve commissioned large-scale public art installations with world-renowned artists, and signature events like Winter Walk and Let’s Glow SF have drawn thousands downtown and driven direct revenue to local businesses.
Culture is a powerhouse. Events shape public perception, generate foot traffic, and signal to visitors and investors that downtown is vibrant.
Goals
We’re building a programming ecosystem worthy of San Francisco’s creative legacy, ensuring that the next great cultural movement isn’t just from San Francisco; it’s also happening right here.
The Arts & Culture program supports initiatives that:
- Drive measurable foot traffic downtown
- Support San Francisco’s working artists and cultural organizations
- Create public moments that enhance downtown’s reputation and energy
- Connect anchor arts institutions with broader audiences
